What is a Megawatt Charging System?

Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) are the next frontier in high-powered charging infrastructure. They can deliver over 3.5 megawatts (MW) or more of direct current (DC) power to meet the energy demands of eMobility adoption, specifically for heavy-duty electric vehicles. While still in the nascent stages of deployment, their significant commercial rollout is anticipated in 2024.

How are they different from the existing charging infrastructure?

Megawatt Charging Systems stands out in terms of their:

  • Power Output: Higher power output of 3.5MW compared to the existing fast-charging output of 150kW to 350kW.
  • Speed: Higher power and current output of megawatt charging systems lead to a significant reduction in the charging time of an electric vehicle (EV). While a CCS (combined charging system, current charging infrastructure) can take hours to charge a heavy-duty electric truck, an MCS is anticipated to do it in under 50 minutes or less.
  • Scalability: The modular design of the megawatt charging systems enables future upgrades to meet the high-power demands of eMobility.

How Does the Megawatt Charging System Work?

MCS function as ultra-high powered charging stations, leveraging advanced technologies such as direct current charging technologies to enable power transfer and charging protocols to ensure seamless charging.

Benefits of MCS

While Megawatt Charging Systems are high-powered, they can offer significant advantages to eMobility adoption, especially for fleets!

  • Reduced Vehicle Downtime: Reduced charging times enable higher availability of electric fleets on the go.
  • Improved Operational Efficiency: With higher availability of eFleets, the routes and schedules can be optimised with shorter charging breaks, promoting operational productivity and business profitability.
  • Scalability: MCS chargers can accommodate multiple heavy vehicles simultaneously for charging, meeting the demands of larger fleets.
  • Future-proofing: As MCS designs are modular, they are equipped to meet the demands of future eMobility developments with more power demand.
